Hello!

Welcome to Litopia Writers' Colony…

...one of the web's oldest and most significant independent writing communities.

The Colony - as we call it - is a very special place. It is both a vibrant literary salon and a sweatshop. You can trade bon mots here over morning coffee, and hone your manuscript in the afternoon.

The Colony is currently divided into 27 different areas of activity, encompassing pretty much every aspect of the writer's life. And we're constantly growing - the podcast being our most recent progeny.

Above all, we're most proud of our strong collegiate atmosphere. As you'll quickly discover, the Colony has an enormously distinctive and friendly ambience. This is a place where talent can be incubated, friendships forged, and careers ignited.

Membership is free - click here to join.

Eighteen months after quitting investment banking to write a children’s book, Litopia colonist Steven Barley had compiled a nice stack of twenty rejection slips.

Undeterred, he took a good long look at himself in the mirror and decided it was time to change tack – and his bold move has been rewarded with news that he’s secured an agent.

If you’re an agent-seeking writer wondering whether you’ll ever unearth a glint of an acceptance in amongst the ever-growing pile of rejections, take heart from the tale of singer and songwriter Shandy Lawson.

When he received his 60th rejection in April, Litopia colonist Shandy was about to call time on his young adult manuscript. It’s a good job he didn’t. A couple of weeks later, and Shandy’s life had turned upside down.

Not content with creating an ingenious, adrenaline-pumping adventure – and setting kids’ eyes a-popping with THAT cool orange cover – Litopia colonist MG Harris is celebrating having this year’s best-selling UK fiction debut for the children and young adult market.

The Joshua Files - Invisible City, the first installment in The Joshua Files, has topped 40,000 sales since its launch in February and has now sold in an additional 13 languages, including German, Japanese, French and Spanish.

As you'll have heard in the daily podcast, a new and exciting forum opens today in the Colony - ASK THE EDITOR. This is an area where Full Members will be able to ask Lynn Price, editorial director for Behler Publications, about her work - and theirs.

Behler Publications is an independent trade publisher producing both fiction and nonfiction. Eleven of Behler’s titles are award winners – the most recent include the 2007 IPPY Gold Medal for Donovan’s Paradigm, the IPPY Silver Medal for Body Trauma: A Writer’s Guide to Wounds and Injuries, and the Ben Franklin winner of Popular Fiction for East Fifth Bliss. This is a golden opportunity for members to have direct contact with a leading editor - thank you, Lynn!

The two books chosen for the June Litopia Book Club selection are The Book Thief by Markus Zuzak (young adult)- and Every Dead Thing by John Connolly (crime.).  Discussion starts early June in the new BOOK CLUB LITOPIA forum inside Litopia Grande.  Come along and join in the debate… and don’t forget to vote for next month’s choices!

And in addition to the good news reported below, we extend our hearty congratulations to Colonist, publisher and author Lynn Price, who received the gold medal IPPY for her novel "Donovan’s Paradigm" at this year's Book Expo America.  "Donovan’s Paradigm" takes a dramatic peek under the white curtain to explore the hearts and minds of two surgeons; what they believe, and how they react to the controversial use of alternative medicine within their hospital. Well done, Lynn!

Very many congratulations to the following Colony members who have achieved significant publishing successes:
  • Colony member Donna Ballman has been signed by Behler Publications to author Let's Quill All The Lawyers: A Writer’s Guide to the Courtroom.
  • Colonist MG Harris has secured a two-book children’s deal with Scholastic Children’s Books through Redhammer Management. "This is the biggest children's deal for a first-time writer so far this year," says Redhammer’s Peter Cox. Elaine McQuade, Managing Director at Scholastic Children's Books says, "MG Harris writes so well. She has created an incredibly clever but accessible plot - it gripped us from beginning to end and we know that it will do the same for young readers."
