Hello!
Welcome to Litopia Writers' Colony…
...one of the web's oldest and most significant independent writing communities.
The Colony - as we call it - is a very special place. It is both a vibrant literary salon and a sweatshop. You can trade bon mots here over morning coffee, and hone your manuscript in the afternoon.
The Colony is currently divided into 27 different areas of activity, encompassing pretty much every aspect of the writer's life. And we're constantly growing - the podcast being our most recent progeny.
Above all, we're most proud of our strong collegiate atmosphere. As you'll quickly discover, the Colony has an enormously distinctive and friendly ambience. This is a place where talent can be incubated, friendships forged, and careers ignited.

EmailIf you’re an agent-seeking writer wondering whether you’ll ever unearth a glint of an acceptance in amongst the ever-growing pile of rejections, take heart from the tale of singer and songwriter Shandy Lawson.
When he received his 60th rejection in April, Litopia colonist Shandy was about to call time on his young adult manuscript. It’s a good job he didn’t. A couple of weeks later, and Shandy’s life had turned upside down.
“A Rosewood Box is a 40,000-word adventure story involving tunnels, tombs, secret stairs and a super-creepy bad guy,” explained Shandy, who lives in Connecticut, where he runs a commercial recording studio. “When yet another rejection came in via email, I was seriously thinking about chucking the whole mess in the trash.
“Then Bob Silverstein, an agent with Quicksilver Books in New York, offered to represent me. After a deluge of changes, the manuscript was submitted a few weeks ago to a dozen publishers of the highest calibre – and I now wait with fingers crossed while I research my next novel.”
Shandy is convinced that words of wisdom from fellow Litopians reaped dividends. He said: “I received a tremendous amount of help at Litopia, and learned quickly not to dismiss any advice, no matter how extreme. The best thing I did was cut out the entire first chapter, as suggested by the Litopians.”
We’ll keep you posted about news of Shandy’s publishing exploits, but for now you can find out more about his musical talents at www.ShandyLawson.com
