Hello!

Welcome to Litopia Writers' Colony…

...one of the web's oldest and most significant independent writing communities.

The Colony - as we call it - is a very special place. It is both a vibrant literary salon and a sweatshop. You can trade bon mots here over morning coffee, and hone your manuscript in the afternoon.

The Colony is currently divided into 27 different areas of activity, encompassing pretty much every aspect of the writer's life. And we're constantly growing - the podcast being our most recent progeny.

Above all, we're most proud of our strong collegiate atmosphere. As you'll quickly discover, the Colony has an enormously distinctive and friendly ambience. This is a place where talent can be incubated, friendships forged, and careers ignited.

Membership is free - click here to join.

Just a quick invitation to join us, if you can, for the recording of tonight’s LITOPIA AFTER DARK.  We have a top-notch panel featuring top-publisher-turned-agent Sarah Davies, and the welcome return of Litopia’s own Richard Howse, fresh from the National Academy of Writing.  All this plus our regular panellists Donna Ballman and Dave Bartram, and our cup verily runneth over!

Even better, tonight immediately after the show (about 9:00pm London time) we’ll be going to the Cheltenham Literature Festival for a live, on-location report from Amanda Lees who will be there, talking to anyone who is anyone – and giving us the inside poop as fresh as it gets!

So do join for all this if you can in the chatroom – the links here:

Choosing a Name

When you first register at the Colony, you will be asked to choose a user name.  Please give this some thought, because you will not be able to change it yourself later (although you might be able to persuade a friendly Moderator to do it for you… but best get it right the first time).

This is a community of writers, so a creative choice of name is appreciated.  As are literary references or neologisms.  Here are some pointers:

*  If you choose an unpronounceable name– “~@+oow0W!” and so on – then we will assume the absolute worst about you.

*  Names with an excessive number of digits will also come under suspicion.  That’s what bots look like.

*  A controversial name may give a bad impression to other members: avoid in your own interest.

*  Promotional usernames are not acceptable.

*  Your user name should not give the impression that your account has permissions which it does not have. Thus it should not contain the terms "administrator", "bureaucrat", "steward", "checkuser", "oversight", "developer" or similar terms like "admin", "sysop" or "moderator".

*  Do NOT use your e-mail address as your username!
