Keeping the faith

29th January 2012 - 4:46pm

Hard, isn't it? I know it can be. I've been thinking about it. There are projects I have that I shelved years ago that I still have faith in. They have flaws, Often very deep ones. One is a 120K full 'script that almost got picked up but failed because of a fundamental weakness in the story. The weakness? I think I know now. I wrote it about the wrong character.

Oops...

A while ago I said on Litopia after Dark that this year would see the beginning of the end of the template of the 'Hero's Journey' for narratives. But it's not quite as black and white as that. I think the generic usage will die a death. God, I hope so - for every movie or book where it's cleverly and meaningfully used there are a hundred that use it as a superficial subsitute for plot, character development and story.

So maybe it's not so much about keeping the faith as letting things go on a long leash, and let them grow rather than tying them to your apron strings and worriting about every little thing.

Who knows? I don't.

Good for you!

Reassuring to know we all go through periods like these. Good to keep positive.

We must endeavor to

We must endeavor to persevere... now repeat after me, "We must... "

I wonder about the extinction of the trope you mentioned, though. Hero's Journey seems hard-wired into the species.
