Hello!

Welcome to Litopia Writers' Colony…

...one of the web's oldest and most significant independent writing communities.

The Colony - as we call it - is a very special place. It is both a vibrant literary salon and a sweatshop. You can trade bon mots here over morning coffee, and hone your manuscript in the afternoon.

The Colony is currently divided into 27 different areas of activity, encompassing pretty much every aspect of the writer's life. And we're constantly growing - the podcast being our most recent progeny.

Above all, we're most proud of our strong collegiate atmosphere. As you'll quickly discover, the Colony has an enormously distinctive and friendly ambience. This is a place where talent can be incubated, friendships forged, and careers ignited.

Membership is free - click here to join.

Ever been frustrated about missing the chance to see your favourite author give a talk because you live too far away to travel? Litopia colonist MG Harris may just have the answer.

MG has been chosen as one of two authors to pilot an initiative by the Learning and Teaching Scotland blog, in association with the Scottish Book Trust.

On Tuesday, June 9th, MG will discuss her children's adventure series, The Joshua Files, to schoolchildren from across Scotland. The reading will be broadcast via Glow Meet, the world’s first national intranet for education, which links every school in Scotland, allowing the children to ask questions direct to MG online.

Paolo was just 25 when his first novel The Solitude of Prime Numbers, took Italy by storm last year, selling over a million copies.  It has been translated into twenty languages and will be filmed by Italian director Saverio Costanzo.

What is it like to have your first novel become such a breathtaking international success?  And how do you cope with all the pressures and expectations this kind of success brings?  Listen to this fascinating conversation as Paolo talks to Peter about every writer’s fantasy – all week!  Make sure you don’t miss a single day – click here to subscribe in iTunes now!

This is Children’s Writing Week on Litopia Daily as we spend time talking to award-winning author Nicola Morgan (she’s had around 90 books published!).  Nicola is the Chair of the Society of Authors in Scotland and a tireless campaigner for the rights of readers and writers everywhere.  Her latest book Deathwatch is about to be published, so it’s the perfect time to talk to one of the most knowledgeable writers in the business about this vital part of the publishing business.  Make sure you don’t miss a single day – click here to subscribe in iTunes now!

“I’m going to die here, in the dirt and the dust and the grime… and I haven’t even been on the job for a week!”

Jay Dobyns’ own words as he talks to Litopia's Peter Cox about his time as an undercover agent with the ATF: an intense, hair-raising and moving story that Jay has now written about in the New York Times bestseller “No Angel: My Undercover Journey to the Heart of the Hells Angels“.  Jay is our guest on Litopia Daily all week: his compelling autobiography is a classic of the genre, on par with the stories of Frank Serpico, Joe Pistone (a.k.a. Donnie Brasco) and Joaquin Garcia (a.k.a. Jackie Falcone). Click here to listen now!

Friday’s LITOPIA AFTER DARK boasts two fantastic children’s’ authors – Amanda Lees is putting in another much-anticipated guest appearance and for the first time, we are delighted to welcome bestselling author of the huge “MATES, DATES”, “TRUTH DARE” and “CINNAMON GIRL” series, Cathy Hopkins!  Add to that our regulars Donna Ballman and Dave Bartram, and you’ve got a potent pack of panellists  - and since writing for children is just about the hottest area in publishing at the moment, you really oughtn’t to miss it!

Do join us live in the chatroom to have your say and take part live – the action starts at 8pm UK (3pm EDT / 12 noon PDT) but the chatroom will be open half an hour earlier.  Here’s the link.

If you aren’t able to join us, the show will be available on iTunes as usual over the weekend.  Full instructions on how to subscribe in iTunes on the podcast site.

You knew publishing was a tough nut to crack. So what do the nuts do when the cracking gets rough?

They read LiToon.

LiToon - The Spitoon of the Publishing Industry

Full of juicy, undigested ejectamenta from too many publishers' lunches, LiToon throws up the inside poop and outside phlegm fresh from the remnants of the book business. Expectorate the unexpected.

Written by LITOPIA AFTER DARK's Richard Howse and illustrated by David Howse, LiToon is both hygienic and truthful (certain restrictions apply). "For innocent souls wishing to conquer the publishing world in one fell swoop", says JK Rowling, "LiToon is the best possible place to start.*"

So spurn the spissitudes of fate, and remember:

Truth hurts. LiToon hurts more.

(*she didn't actually say this)

We’re pleased to announce that the first fifty episodes of LITOPIA AFTER DARK are now available again!

Our podcast feed only includes the 100 most recent shows.  This means that earlier shows have not been available – until now.

If you haven’t yet thrilled to such exotic delights as Toad Suck Arkansas Reverse Shuffle Six Card Strip Pokerette or even the much-loved but mysteriously short-lived Ant Game – this is your chance to experience what life was like in those halcyon, salad days.

Instructions on how to subscribe to these vintage episodes (free, of course) after the jump…

Choosing a Name

When you first register at the Colony, you will be asked to choose a user name.  Please give this some thought, because you will not be able to change it yourself later (although you might be able to persuade a friendly Moderator to do it for you… but best get it right the first time).

This is a community of writers, so a creative choice of name is appreciated.  As are literary references or neologisms.  Here are some pointers:

*  If you choose an unpronounceable name– “~@+oow0W!” and so on – then we will assume the absolute worst about you.

*  Names with an excessive number of digits will also come under suspicion.  That’s what bots look like.

*  A controversial name may give a bad impression to other members: avoid in your own interest.

*  Promotional usernames are not acceptable.

*  Your user name should not give the impression that your account has permissions which it does not have. Thus it should not contain the terms "administrator", "bureaucrat", "steward", "checkuser", "oversight", "developer" or similar terms like "admin", "sysop" or "moderator".

*  Do NOT use your e-mail address as your username!
