A Defining Year

What kind of new year is it for you so far?  That’s what Peter wants to know today.  How is the economy doing?  Will publishing survive unscathed, or will 2009 – as Peter believes – become a defining moment in the emergence of a radically new and reshaped publishing industry.

In today’s Write Report, Donna tells how a recent US child safety law will impact the publishing business – a “potential calamity” for the business, according to Random House’s boss.  It’s all about testing products for lead content – that’s right, lead as in “lead balloon”.  That’s all the industry needs right now.  And – oh yes – libraries will have to throw out thousands of books (or pay a fortune for testing) and used bookstores will, of course, close down.  You can help stem this madness – call your congressperson and ask for exemption for publishers!

In Eve’s Salmagundi Club, she features a blog by Jane Smith – is that a real name? – about getting published, and all that that entails.
