Award-winning author Geoff Dyer, our guest all week on Litopia Daily

The Daily Telegraph has called him “the best living writer in Britain”.  Zadie Smith believes “his prose is the equal of anyone in the country – a national treasure.”  Geoff Dyer is the consummate writer’s writer, and he is our guest all this week on Litopia Daily.

On the eve of publication of his fourth work of fiction, Jeff in Venice, Death in Varanasi, he talks to Peter about: growing up working class… how one teacher made all the difference to him… getting sacked for his bad attitude… and the moment in your life when you realize you’re a writer.

In today’s Write Report, Donna reports on the result of the annual Diagram prize for the oddest book title of the year – and the winner is… (guess you’ll have to listen!).  And sci-fi fans – did you realize how much Christian allegory it employs?

In Eve’s Salmagundi Club, she finds the most amazingly exhaustive writer’s guide to creating fictional characters.

Fascinating interview, Peter. I'm sure most writers can relate to Geoff's 'bad attitude' when he was younger, with the day job daring to take up so much of his time. It sure does get in the way. I know I had a lousy attitude to work in my teens and early twenties. Some might argue not that much has changed…

Geoff Dyer is a writer who has the courage/confidence to be himself – not easy in this age, and getting tougher all the time. I think it’s pretty inspiring…
